Deactivating Memberships - Pros & Cons?

Hello Tessitura Family,

I have a question in regard to deactivating memberships.  Without getting into the nitty-gritty background as to why we have this process, we have a situation where we often have to add a membership manually into Tessitura.  Basically in a nutshell, we allow donations to some funds to count toward a cumulative membership benefit level.  For instance, if you give to one of our support groups, you are offered the benefits at the same level as your friends giving to our annual fund.  Easy and straightforward.  If you give to both the support group and the annual fund, we have to manually adjust this membership.  Still no issues, until such a time that this membership is up for expiration, drops into lapsed and we need to renew the "placeholder" annual membership manually because the donor has already paid their new year of support group dues, but not their annual fund donation.  Which leads me to that question ...

We are in the situation where development officers need to add a new membership to a record that already has an active membership on the record.  We cannot adjust the membership status parameters for active, lapsed, and inactive because these time frames are applied to the larger global annual fund membership audience.  So, the question arises, are there any repercussions to just allowing staff to deactivate these memberships and add new ones right then and there, or should we wait for the membership to either expire/inactivate or renew per our guidelines and then the staff member must remember/remind themselves go back to the record and adjust at that time?

Thoughts?
