Assigning Multiple Memberships

Hello all,

I am entering a large gift under a corporate constituency that I need to divvy up and credit to multiple individual constituents to create memberships.  I was at first going to Soft Credit each constituent, but as that won't be reflected in the individual's total giving, I'm now thinking I'll assign memberships instead. Two questions about this process:

1. Is it possible to use one lump sum gift to assign multiple memberships?

2. Can you retroactively assign memberships to a gift already posted, or do you have to refund the entire gift and add all the memberships again each time?

Any help is appreciated and let me know if I can clarify at all!

Thank you,

Frannie

  • Hi Frannie,

You are not able (to my knowledge) to add multiple memberships to a single gift.
Since memberships are not tied to financial records it might be possible to manually do so through SSMS but I would think that would cause all kinds of reporting and procedural errors and would recommend submitting a ticket on TASK before attempting something like that.
You could manually add a membership into the history tab for each constituent (which you could probably do en masse via SSMS safely) but it would not be tied to a specific gift, nor would the patron have the soft credit that comes with assigning a membership via gift entry.

I would recommend breaking it up and entering each individuals separately in the corporate account. I know it is time consuming but I think that the benefits of doing it correctly outweigh the time you could save.

    I hope that makes sense.

    Cheers!

  • That does make sense--and I had a feeling it wasn't going to be as easy as assigning 20 memberships.

    Thank you Ryan!

  • You might want to take a look at this thread as well which talks about using the Contribution Import Utility for something similar.
