Best Practices re: Naming Gifts

This question is not Tessitura specific, but I am interested in your expertise none the less!

My organization is wrapping up a capital campaign and has a number of naming opportunities remaining.  We are considering best practices and policies regarding these gifts.  Do any of your organizations have policies in place whereby a certain percentage or basis amount of the naming pledge must be paid before the donor's name is actually placed on the object/area?  If so, would you mind sharing your policy?

Best,

Rhealyn

  • Hello Rhealyn,

The following is from our Gift Acceptance Policy and speaks to your question.  Our policy is to assume good intent and place the naming as soon as we are able, taking order fulfillment, Center and donor approval, etc. into account.  Some naming opportunities go up quickly, others have taken a few years, but we assume they will fulfill their commitment.  If they are unable to do so, then we have provision that help us to handle those difficult situations.

    Non-Fulfillment

In the event that a donor fails to fulfill the terms of a naming gift, including pledge fulfillment schedule, the Center reserves to right to remove the donor’s name from the recognition elements and naming opportunities at its discretion. The Center may offer such naming opportunities to other donors, if it is determined that the gift is uncollectible.  The Center will use the procedures for review of delinquent pledges detailed in this policy.

    Partial Fulfillment

In the case of a naming gift which has been partially fulfilled, but the remainder of the pledge has been deemed uncollectible, the Center reserves the right to remove the donor’s name from any naming element and provide recognition at the amount received to the Campaign.  Best efforts will be made to engage the donor in an alternate recognition plan.

I hope this helps you and your organization.

    Happy New Year!
