Changing Membership Organizations

Until this year, our annual donors of $1000 or more were in a single membership organization with 7 levels (starting at $1,000, $1,500, $2,000, $3,000, $5,000, $10,000, and $25,000).

Now we're splitting this organization into two. The 5 lowest levels ($1000, $1500, $2000, $3000, and $5000) will continue to be called President's Circle. Our new Impresario Circle will have 3 levels: $10,000, $15,000, and $25,000.

I'd appreciate advice on the best ways to set up the new membership organization and remove the top levels from the old President's Circle organization. Are there any particular pitfalls to watch for?

    I agree with Rey; unless you have a Tessitura-driven reason to change your membership org, leave it alone, or you lose some tracking ability and make reporting harder on yourself.  The customer doesn't even know what a Membership Org is, so just because you're changing how you organize your levels doesn't mean the membership org has to change.  Our basic and supporting memberships are handled completely separately in different departments, but are still in one membership organization so that we can do easy tracking between the sets of levels.

    You might also want to check out the conference archives for this year's conference; the "using memberships" session had one group present about why they combined multiple membership orgs into one, and another present about why they split one membership org into many.  You'll want the 2nd and 3rd slide decks in the presentation; the first one (written by me, so I'm allowed to say this!) is more basic than you'll want.

    Thank you, Rey and Beth. This is so helpful. I was hoping for a way not to split the organization, but was concerned that the two groups need to point to two different funds. But from what I can see in the conference Powerpoint presentation, that's not an issue. You've made my day!
