Pledge payments from a constituent who did not make the pledge.

Since contributions from one constituent cannot be used to pay off a pledge for another constituent (ex - pledge is made on an individual record but payments come via a family fund or DAF) we adjust the pledge down by the payment amount to keep total giving accurate.  This is working fairly well for us with one big issue: when pulling pledge reminders the adjusted pledge total/balance/remainder is pulled in, not the original information as the donor would expect to see.  Does anyone have any suggestions for managing this?  Thanks.
