Plans and Plan Maintenance to Track Contribution Acknowledgements

We are looking for a way to keep track of acknowledgement for higher level gifts.  We are considering creating a default "Acknowledgement" plan for each of our higher level donors that we would keep open in perpetuity and add a plan step for each contribution/acknowledgement as time goes on.  If a gift was in direct response to an existing fundraising plan we would add a plan step to that plan as well as the generic Acknowledgement plan (manually recreating the plan step in both plans).  Is anyone else doing something like this or are there other ways that folks are managing this type of thing?  We are new Tessitura users and are happy for any feedback on this idea from more seasoned users.  Thank you!
