Gifts in kind

Haia all

We're looking at ways to record gifts in kind without processing a contribution and wondered if anyone has any ideas? Often its hard to put a value on items we are gifted as they could be paintings/pottery etc and we don't want this income to show on income reports, as we haven't actually recieved that income.

Initial idea was to use a custom form field on Plans or a step type/plan status which could then be pulled through to portfolios and/or analytics, but keen to know if anyone has any other suggestions!

Many thanks,

Kirsty

  • Hello Kristy,
We use a Fund/Campaign called In Kind and we do track in kind gifts as contributions, but I think your Plan/Plan Step idea would work well! While I admit I've never tracked in kind gifts any other way than through a Fund/Campaign, I do like this method. Donors still expect an acknowledgement letter for in kind gifts, so I can assign it through the Contribution. The donor also often views their in kind gift as just as important as their cash gifts, so this way we have a full picture of their giving in one place. We don't have too many in kind gifts, so if you're receiving a lot I can see how they would clutter up a Contribution record, especially since they do feed into the donor's total giving amount. I think utilizing custom fields within Plans would be an easy way to still track and report on these gifts. Curious to follow this thread and see what other folks are doing, though.
