Contributions Attributed to Households Automatically

As I've been entering more and more contributions in Tessitura, I've noticed that whenever an individual constituent record that is also a primary household affiliate is selected for the contribution owner, the Household record is automatically selected instead and the individual record is credited as the initiator. Once the contribution is entered and we look at the contribution in the constituent record, both the Household and the Individual are credited for the contribution, creating a duplicate contribution that distorts the individual's total giving. This has proven problematic as we try to pull reports and lists for total giving from folks such as board members, with some contributions not accounted for or duplicate contributions appearing.
Is there a particular reason why the system forces the contribution to be attributed to the household and not the individual within the household? We would strongly prefer the contributions to be attributed to individuals, and when you click into a household's contributions it would show the individual contributions of the people within the household.
I hope this makes sense. Any advice or solutions are sincerely appreciated.

  • Hi Matt! So our system is somewhat similar, but we're given the option to say "Yes" or "No" to using the HH instead of the individual record:

Do you have a Database Administrator or other IT person who handles the backend? If so, I would talk to them about that option (I don't know how it works on the back end, so I can't provide guidance on that).

The other thing (which may not help for your specific situation, but wanted to suggest) is we have a custom list criteria that pulls gift information based on whether the person is the Owner, Initiator, or both for a specific gift. Again, you'd need to talk to someone on the tech side but this could be an option as well.

Also you may want to cross post this in the Fundraising & Development Community forum in case anyone there has some insights!
