Donor Sources of Funding - Financial Institution

I'm looking for some suggestions for tagging records where the donor gifts from a DAF, IRA, or some other financial institution - I'm considering an Attribute, Relationship to a parent constituent record, or a custom field ON the unique contribution entry. Have any orgs done this? What worked for you? I'm also looking for ease of list pulls and reporting.

Thanks,

Marie

  • I've used a gift channel of DAF and IRA successfully to isolate these gifts, and use gift channel for stock as well.  We have donors that give via DAF/IRA and stock for some of their giving, but may use checks or on account for other contributions.  It's easy to create a list of these gifts and use them in extractions or reports.   It's worked well for our organization.

  • Admittedly I haven't done this myself, but my first thought was an attribute. That said, a relationship between the institution and the donor(s) who use it could be helpful because then you could keep track of both pieces (the institution and the individuals who use it) would could better aid in reporting (for example if you wanted to see how many folks use Schwab vs. Fidelity). You may want to also post this in the Fundraising and Development Community as they could have some ideas for you!
