We've decided if a person is deceased and is the only person on the account that we will update their status as deceased and inactivate the record with a deceased type. Our development department is concerned about how this effects reporting, especially when it comes to reporting on contributions. Can anyone shed some light on this for us? I can't seem to find much on the forums beyond how other organizations identify deceased patrons.
Thanks!
At SF Opera, we’re constantly updating our Deceased Patrons policy. We had several learning moments along the way, and specifically, recommend thinking through the ramifications of reporting across departments, including your program listings, activities, box office ‘active subscriptions’ etc. It’s important to pull everyone together and get some buy in across the entire organization!
Specific to development, if we are expecting a planned gift of some sort, we will change the patron record into an ‘estate’ type. You need an open record since you can not pull a list on an inactive patron. However, almost every ‘estate’ has different specifications, so they’re almost always handled individually.
Good luck,
Marissa Axell

Inactivating a record does remove it from reports. So there is no impact to reporting
Inactivating a record does remove it from Lists created with List Manager. Inactive records are included in Extractions unless otherwise suppressed.

Thanks for the responses. So it sounds like if we inactivate a record that has giving history then that data will be excluded from reports and won't give us accurate numbers correct?
