I am looking for a baseline for how much time Advancement/Development staff spends on Prospect Research when there is not a dedicated Researcher on staff. So really a percent of time and if you use a dedicated product for the research. (iWave/Donor Search/Wealth Engine)Sort of broken down into these "areas"Annual FundCorporate/FoundationCapital/EndowmentGala/Special EventsThanksMary
Hi Mary,
I am responsible for research and moves management, as well as corporate, foundation, and leadership gift asks. We have a Director of Development and two other full-time annual funds officers and one part-time person in charge of legacy/planned giving. Because I have these other responsibilities, I divide my time based on the percentage of funding from each area. So, given that individual giving is about 80% of our giving, I spend 60-80% of my time (3-4 days) on individuals.
From that, I spend a total of about one full day on research, including my moves meetings with the other staff. The rest of that time is spent on calls and meetings with constituents. Then, depending on what is coming due or in the works, the remaining 20 - 40% of the week is spent on grants and corporate meetings/proposals. Annual Fund donor research is ongoing and I have a weekly system for new donors, I attend Chamber events and keep watch on new corporations, and I add people to our legacy asks as I see it is appropriate timing, and work on research needed for event guests as they register - leading up to and completed at least one-two weeks before the event.
I hope that helps you think about how to best organize your time, based on other responsibilities you may have.
Melissa
