Where to look for grants for technology efforts?

Hello, Devo hive.

We're going to need to do a complete overhaul of our technical network over the next two years, and I was curious if any of the Fundraising folks could direct me to some resources for funding. We have only one person in our organization who handles annual grant writing and capital funding, so I would love to direct them to some funding opportunities that focus specifically on technical equipment and/or cloud services. Please let me know if you have any leads!

Thank you!!

  • Hi Emily,

Best of luck in your search! The only time we've ever gotten technology successfully funded was when it was a part of some larger undertaking. For example, a grant that was supposed to help us reconsider our marketing strategies around new plays also helped pay for parts of a website overhaul which were aimed at selling new plays.

I've turned on notifications b/c I'm curious if you get any hits, but my counsel would be to consider what things those tech changes will make possible and "bundle" them in that way. Or find a sympathetic trustee.

    Best of luck!

  • Hi,

I apologize if this is obvious, but funders that support capacity building are sometimes willing to support technology projects. In NYC, the Booth Ferris Foundation is one of the usual suspects. NYC capital funds can also be used for tech equipment systems, but it can be very very difficult to come up with an eligible project - it is really hard to use their money for software (including firmware and operating systems) and nearly impossible for anything cloud-based or with a subscription model. It also takes years to get the equipment if you are funded. The move towards software being sold by subscription only makes it harder to raise money for; I don't think a lot of funders have caught up with the change.

    Good luck!

    Katy
