Managing Households in Extractions

Hello Tessitura world,

I have a series of questions about households and extractions that might make your head spin but I'm hoping there might be someone who has gone through this before who has some answers:

I have an extraction with segments A, B and C, all of which are replacing individuals with households. Constituent X qualifies for segment A, so Constituent X Household is now in segment A.

1. If Constituent X also qualifies for segment B, will Tessitura recognize that Constituent X already qualified for a previous segment and skip them, even though that individual record was not ultimately the one that was assigned to the segment?  Or, since segment B is also trying to replace them with their household, will Tessitura recognize that the household is already in segment A and not assign anything to segment B, or will it recognize that the household is already in segment A but then assign Constituent X as an individual to segment B since that particular constituent record is not assigned to a segment yet?

2. If Constituent X Spouse qualifies for segment C, and segment C is trying to replace them with their household, will Tessitura recognize that the household is already in segment A and not assign anything to segment C, or will it recognize that the household is already in segment A but then assign Constituent X Spouse as an individual to segment B since that particular constituent record is not assigned to a segment yet?

Basically, once a household is assigned to a segment I don't want the A1 and A2 affiliates of that household to be pulled into that segment or assigned to any additional segments because any mailing lists generated would result in multiple mailings going to the same address unless we do a lot of manual cleanup.  Right now I am basically duplicating all of my segments so I have:

- Segment A, replacing individuals with households

- Suppression of A1/A2 affiliates attached to any households in segment A

- Segment B, replacing individuals with households

- Suppression of A1/A2 affiliates attached to any households in segment B

etc.

Is there a cleaner way of doing this?  Or something I'm missing about the way Tessitura compiles the data?

Thanks!

Anne

  • I  handle this by creating two extraction segments per “segment.”

The first segment is the actual people I want to grab, replace with HH, etc.. The second segment is a suppression that replaces individuals with their HH and all primary affiliates.

It works nicely to dedupe by mailing lists. Let me know if you need more info  = )

  • Hi Anne,

If each segment has replace with HH, then the Individuals will not appear in segments B or C.  The household will appear in Segment A and the household would be selected for Segment B and C, but since it is already in A, it will not be repeated.  (so you don’t have to add suppression for those segments)
However, if you have segment A replace household, but Segment B and C do not replace household, then the Individuals will appear in the respective segments since their account numbers do not appear in Segment A.

    Hope that helps.
