Pledge Payments

Are there any organizations that have any issues with pledge payments that come from an unexpected source (corporation, foundation, donor advised fund). At the beginning of each fiscal year our Board of Trustees submit pledges in writing for their annual giving excpectation which are entered into Tess.

However, they do not always indicate where the payment will come from. My understanding is that Tess will not allow a payment in one record (Corporation/Foundation) to be applied toward a pledge that lives in another record (Trustee). This happens frequently enough to where zero'ing out the initial pledge and reentering the gift would be frustrating.

Thanks for any suggestions!

  • What Alyssa states is correct and would be all donors would do this.

Something to consider is to do the payment as a soft credit – if you apply the payment as an ADJUSTMENT and not a payment, the system will let you apply the payment and enter a soft credit.  If you do as a payment by mistake you can go back and enter the adjustment in a different batch.

It is good for Corporate or Foundation or even other parties paying if after considering everything it works for your group.

Donor Advised are tricky since folk know they can’t pay a pledge with  a DAF check but folks know a lot of things they want us to do……  you will have to determine if your Finance/Legal are okay doing this for DAFs

The other thing doing a soft credit does is solve the typical reporting problem in seeing what someone has donated to the organization.

Play around in test to see how comfortable everyone is with this reverse credit.

On our pledge forms, we include options of "I will be making a grant recommendation to a donor-advised fund for the above amount." and "I will be making a charitable distribution from my individual retirement account (IRA) which is managed by [blank] institution." in the "Payment Method" section. We won't book a pledge for those who indicate they are giving through their DAF and will only book a pledge for an IRA contribution when we know the managing institution. Hope that helps!
