Membership Best Practice Question

Hello Tessitura hivemind!

I have a question for organizations who use Memberships for donor contributions (i.e. not literal memberships, like museums). Do you have a membership level below your first donor level, or does your structure start at your first level? I ask because I'm struggling with the affect of microdonations renewal schedules.

Thoughts? Does anyone forsee/Has anyone had an issue with removing the "below membership" level?

  • Scott,

For all of our contribution-related Memberships, the first/lowest level represents the minimum gift/cumulative amount received which results in a membership; there is no level below the qualifying level.

We're still finding our feet with the best way to manage Memberships and renewals strictly using Tessitura, but this has been our system essentially since we began using the database.

    Thank you,

    Brian

  • In membership we use a first level below our first donor level with benifits.  I think we call it something like non membership level below level 1. This seems to be important for smooth operations of Tessitura.  This level just has no benefits.  Sets no constituency codes so no benefits are granted.

We tend to put micro donations in a completely different campaign, with it's own campaign category, and use a different fund as well.  We try to keep the micro donations that will never get any benefits and can never add up to a total of contributions that would produce a membership  granting benifits in their own campaign.

    Hope that's helpful.

  • Hi Scott,

We do have a membership level set-up below our first benefits level (simply called “Donor” for us, then the other levels have their level name/amount).

All individuals who give below our first membership level get this “level” in their record and we do track how they move over time.  We do find that some of the people who give several round up donations with their orders throughout the year eventually reach our base membership level.

We’ve never tried removing this but for us I think it would cause a problem as many people have it assigned and we’d have to change some of our campaign/gift entry structures if we removed this level.

    Laurel
