Ticket Donation Acknowledgement Letters

Hello Tessitura Community!

I am having a little bit of a dilemma trying to figure out how to acknowledge patrons who donate their tickets back for resale.

After hearing a little bit about this during a session at the conference, it seems like "technically" if those tickets are not resold OR if that money is not transferred to a development fund, then "technically" the patron wouldn't be able to claim that as a charitable donation with the IRS?

I have tried to research some hard facts and regulations on this and have had no luck....

We want to acknowledge those patrons who decide to take time out and donate their tickets back, however, we don't want to communicate a false tax-benefit.

Has anyone else dealt with this? How do you acknowledge ticket donations?

I can use all the help I can get!

THANK YOU!

Daniela

  • Up here in Canada at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre we issue them a gift in kind tax receipt for the value of the ticket. They don’t receive and donor benefits other than the tax receipt.
