Deducting value of premium for tax-receiptable portion of contribution

A benefit for sponsors/donors to our upcoming Gala event in May is to receive two tickets to the event, in addition to a tax receipt for their contribution.  The Gala is built in the Elevated Events module.  When entering the contribution is it possible to recognize its full value, yet deduct the value of the tickets for the tax receipt?

  • also, I assume that you can build a premium for this in Campaigns > References > Premiums and attach it to your appeal for use in contribution entry. You would then deduct the goods_services_value from the recd_amt when you print your acknowledgements. This is assuming that you have the elevated event set up to generate acknowledgements in the first place.

    Hi Ryan,

    Addressing your two comments:

    1) The ticket value deduction only applies to a certain level of donations/sponsorships.  All aspects of the gala campaign including regular ticket sales feed into here, so I'm not sure that using "Non Ded Amt" would work.

    2)  I had thought about premiums, and yes I do have acknowledgements set up for this event.  How do I ensure that within Tessitura both the contribution and subsequently the constituent's record indicate that a) the full donation amount is recognized, b) the tax-receipt is issued for the lower amount?

Thank you so much for your assistance and ideas.

  • You could set up the event so that only once someone hits that level is a portion of their "gift" is non-deductible via the "level" tab in the elevated event (see help documentation). You can then run that same special event receipt listing report by the calculation mode of "guests/Levels" to get the deductible and non-deductible amounts for tax receipts. I don't know how this will affect the acknowledgment that would also be generated so you might need to pull people that give at that level out since you have already sent a receipt to them.

As far as premiums go everything in tessitura reflects the total amount of the gift including the premium amount. So if I paid $100 for the gala and $50 is considered a non-deductible ticket value my contribution record and my membership record (if affected) would still say I gave $100. The received amount on the acknowledgment would also show $100 that is why you need to deduct the goods_services_value column that is also in the acknowledgment output right next to the recd_amt column.

Thanks Ryan.  This information is all very helpful.  I'll take this information back to Development and Finance and we will make it all work.
