Micro/Macro -- small or large?

I was wondering if someone could help me understand membership micro/macro trends -- part of this is just not making sense to me.

What I understand is that these trends describe changes in membership level from one year to the next. The Macro trend tells you if the membership LEVEL has changed, or if the level stayed the same but there was still an increase or decrease in membership value.

The Micro trend tells you if the membership CATEGORY has changed, but only in the following way: if the category changed, the Micro trend will be NEW, and if the category didn't change, then the micro trend will be the same as the macro trend.

What I don't get is why Macro=Level and Micro=Category, and not the other way around. Membership Level Categories are necessarily a "larger" structure than membership levels, simply because you can assign more than one level to a category, but you can't assign more than one category to a level. And with "Micro" referring to small-scale and "Macro" referring to large scale, I don't understand why large-scale Macro is used to refer to the smaller-scale levels, while small-scale "Micro" is used to refer to large-scale Categories.

  • Honestly Nick, I have tried over and over and I can't get it straight in my head, either. That naming convention is on my list of things I'd like us to re-assess when the MAC gets to revamping membership, if that's any comfort.

Has anyone else come up with any mnemonics to help make sense of this?

  • Hi all,

When training on this we discuss it was developed that way since there are fewer moves/trend changes with the Micro Trend from category to category– so smaller. And there tend to be more moves/trend changes with the Macro Trend from level to level, so larger.

    Hopes this helps a bit!

  • Oof! I can't think of another time I've ever heard macro/micro being used to refer to frequency of occurrence in that manner. Actually, when I think of micro, I think of a small wavelength -- which would actually increase frequency!

Is there anything baked into Tessitura (like a canned report, maybe) that presents membership trend data in this manner? Like the number of macro trend upgrades vs micro trend upgrades?

  • Hi Nick,

The micro & macro trends are part of the Membership Cube in TStats, so that would be a great place to create a simple report for viewing that information. Canned from Tessitura, the trends are list criteria, as well as output elements, and the macro trend is part of the New Contributions Report. For looking at movement between levels, the Membership Movement Report or Membership Renewal Analysis is a great resource, but does not reference those trends.

Hope some of those tools will assist in getting the output you are looking for! Thanks,
