Matching Gifts 101

Hello all,

I apologize if this is rudimentary - but it is not a feature my organization has (to my knowledge) utilized before.

We recently received a gift from a donor with the contingency that the gift amount be matched by other donors. Since that award, we have received several gifts that we would like to apply to that matching requirement.  Is there a way to track this activity in the contribution entry somehow, so we can pull a report later on and see how we are doing on our matching goal?  I was under the impression I could designate the first donor somewhere on the Match/Credit tab in the contribution batch, but the Matching Companies fields don't seem to be editable.  Any ideas?  I would love not to have another excel living outside of Tessitura. :)

Thanks!

  • You are correct that there is a matching gift creditee functionality within contribution entry. While in the contribution entry process, one of the tabs is labeled “Matching/Credit”. There is a place to include the amount to be credited and then add the creditee. My organizations reserves this for 1-1 matches such as a company matching a donation on behalf of one of their employees. (This procedure can be found in the PDF documentation on Tessituranetwork.com under “Contribution Processing.”)

If I understand the situation you are describing, my organization tracks the situation that differently. I attribute your situation to that of more of a “campaign/appeal” style match. For example, “raise $X (from multiple sources) and then receive $X amount from match donor. For this, I use one or more appeals with the different sources I need to track. Then I can pull the appeal and sources to track the money raised toward the match goal.

    I hope this helps.

    Marie
