Contributions In Honor/In Memory Of ...

Is there a best practice for processing contributions from one person in honor or in memory of someone else? I see on the forums that some groups have built custom fields for this purpose. I also know that one can apply membership benefits in honor of a third party--but I'm not sure that would work in the case of "in memory of" someone.

Thanks!

At the Met, we have an appeal and source code for tracking the In Memory gifts.  The appeal is in our Misc campaign.   The money is posted to donors requests.  If nothing specific is requested then it is deposited to the annual general fund.

If we have a large number of gifts made in a person’s honor or “in memory of”  a special source code is set up to track these specific gifts.

Recently (within the month), we have designed a custom tab to track the various information surrounding these gifts.  The corresponding report is used to provide data for mail merge letters.

We have also set up an Association type to link records if applicable.

    Leslie,

Thanks! So where do you put the information about the deceased? Is it a note in the Contribution Entry?
