Add Membership without Contribution

We have recently implemented a new Membership program.  Our previous program was a 3-year giving program but it was not considered a membership.  We have a couple dozen donors that are still within their 3-year period and I want to "convert" them to the appropriate membership level.  Most if not all of these donors are fully paid for their 3 years and the contributions were prior to this fiscal year.  

What is the preferred method for adding a Membership for these donors without a contribution record?  I thought about manually entering a Membership record on the History tab and setting the Recognition amount to match their contribution from the previous program.

Are there any issues with doing it this way?  Can anyone think of a better way to accomplish this?

    We just did something similar with 11,000+ memberships in two membership organizations.  Being consolidated into a single membership program.  We did the majority of this on the back end.  However some was done manually on the front end in much the way you describe below.  We generally are calling these new memberships “continuing comp memberships” in the new membership organization.  This sounds like what you are planning to do.  For just a couple of dozen memberships doing this manually using the standard tessitura tools is quite doable.  There are some impacts on reporting that you will have to take into account and might determine what you put in the rec_amt field.
