We had to setup a custom procedure to manage this, we didn't want to setup everything as a membership. Basically we have a flag on the contribution to say if payment is recurring and the billing schedule for that contribution. We have a report that will create a file that can then be imported using the contribution import report.
We did have a few problems when we first set this up but now is running pretty smoothly!

Did you have your own IT folks set up the customization? Is it something that could be shared with other users? We do not have IT support in our office, which is why I may have to look at other vendors to manage the recurring gift process outside of Tessitura.
