I am trying to pull a list of donors who have given consecutively over the last four years. I am suppressing brand new current year donors, too. Not having luck. Lapsed donors from past seasons seem to keep finding their way into the mix.

When you are pulling consecutive details you have to put the data in new rows for each year. For example if you were using campaign you would want the following in a single criteria set for the list or segment:
Contribution Campaign HAS 08-09
Contribution Campaign HAS 07-08
Contribution Campaign HAS 06-07
Contribution Campaign HAS 05-06
