Contribution records post divorce

This issue has been raised multiple times, and our Development group has asked that we raise it again.
My apologies for dredging up a commonly discussed problem ..

It is not uncommon for a household to make a donation, and then divorce.
When we learn about the divorce we split the parties and determine which individual will keep the transactions.

In this case, nearly 20 years ago a household made a contribution to our organization.
Later, the members of the household divorced.
The contribution was recorded in our legacy system and the contribution was assigned to one of the parties.  The "other" individual had no contribution history in this legacy system.

2+ years later, the contribution data was imported into Tessitura.
Now, in Tessitura, that donation from years ago is linked to one of the individuals.
And, as expected, there isn't any contribution history for the "other" individual.
However, this years-old contribuion should actually be shared by the two individuals, since it was made pre-divorce.

This scenario is impacting our Development group because they would like to approach both individuals for new contributions.
And, when they speak to these individuals they would like to see the all of contribution history, including those made pre-divorce.

We had a thought:
Our Development group would issue a soft credit to the "other" individual with a soft credit type of "pre-divorce contrib".
I'm not certain if any existing reports would capture this historical info.  If necessary, we may have to create a custom report.
Fortunately, there are not that many records with this problem.
Keeping track of these problems out of Tessitura is not a preferred option, but we understand it may be the better method.

We're relatively new to Tessitura (now in our 2nd year) and I'm certain this problem has been addressed by other organizations.

Our Development group will welcome any comments.

  • Hi Wendell -

I'm not a programmer, but as a development officer, I'd suggest your staff use the Campaign Comparison report, which can show soft-credited contributions, should you elect to go that route.  I use it for many things, simply because it has that option.  Using soft credits also mean that your staff can quickly see the "entire" donation history while in a constituent's record, which is also useful.
