It's been so long since I set up membership parameters, I have forgotten something. What criteria turns the membership "Inactive" vs "Lapsed" For some of our major gifts categories, I'd like to set them so they don't become inactive till much longer than the other memberships, as I don't want them falling off my membership renewals list if they are chronically late givers... Once the membership changes to Inactive they don't pull on my list, as I use the criteria "membership current level" and "membership current exp date"

We do the same thing--our upper level memberships stay in "lapsed" longer than the others. The Lapse date is with the expiration settings in Membership setup, (GoTo -> Campaigns, Campaigns -> Memberships.) For each individual membership level you can set "Lapse x months after expiration." As long as the Membership Update Utility is running regularly, the membership goes to Lapsed at the expiration date, and then from Lapsed to Inactive based on that setting.
