Donors of 10+ Years

is there a quick, easy way to pull donors/members of a certain level of 10+ years

  • It certainly seems more accurate than the way I was doing it, and not too complicated with copy and all.  Thanks so much!

    Hi Leah,

I assume you mean current donors who have given at that level 10+ consecutive years? If so, you can do this with an extraction.

For example, say you want to look at all donors who gave $10,000 or more for 10+ consecutive years. You could start with a suppression segment that suppresses everybody who did not give in 2005, or who gave less than $10K. Then copy that segment and edit it to suppress everybody who didn't give or gave less than $10K in 2006. And so on, up through 2013. Your final segment would simply be people who did give $10K+ in 2014. Anybody who had not also given at that level for any of the prior 10 years would have been suppressed by one of the earlier segments, so what you have left should be your 10+ year $10K+ donors.

How well that solution fits your definitions of quick and easy I'll leave to you! It wouldn't work if you just wanted to know how many people had given $10K+ in any 10 years. For that you might need some custom SQL.

    Good luck!

  • Matthew's extraction is much like what we have ended up doing when seeking accuracy in long-term donor appreciations and recognitions.  However, we add in one more complication to catch donors who donate near the end of one FY / beginning of the next.  From the donor's perspective, they are making annual donations with a slightly different date each year, but to us, it can occasionally wind up being twice in one FY then skip a year.  We try to catch these with some queries including the language "having count" that extend multiple fiscal year ranges: gave x amount in at least 2 out of 3 FY, or 4 out of 5, or 9 out of 10, or 10 out of 11...  Look at who is on this "having count" list that isn't on "Matthew's" then review the outliers manually.  The extra effort is when we're being very careful not to leave anyone out, rather than just getting rough counts.  I should say our fiscal year does not match the calendar year nor the fiscal year of all our donors, and I think therein lies the source of this complication.
