“Duplicate Event Guest Names Not Allowed”

We ran into an interesting error message during contribution entry today that I thought might be worth running by the Forum.

During entry of a contribution to a non-elevated event campaign, we surprisingly got the error, Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 “Duplicate Event Guest Names Not Allowed.”

There had indeed been Duplicate guest names entered on the constituent's record, and an update to distinguish them got us past the error on a second attempt.  But we took care to monitor the process carefully during our second run.

  1.  We entered some elevated event contributions in a batch
  2. We began to enter a non-elevated event contribution in the same batch
  3. We noticed that the campaign dropdown pre-populated with the same elevated event campaign in 1
  4. We noticed the Event tab was not grayed out at this point, and that the event guests populated the event tab
  5. We flipped the campaign to non-elevated event campaign
  6. The Event tab grayed out
  7. Finish contribution entry
  8. on the first run, we hit the Guest Name error when closing the contribution, but on our second try, after updating Guest names to be distinct, we did not encounter the error.

I just thought it was interesting that the error-check for guest names came into play, apparently due to campaign defaulting to the last one we'd set in this particular batch.  I'd be interested to know if other organizations batch by campaign type and if anyone else has run into this error.
