Children's Theatre Company currently uses a outside vendor for our telefunding efforts. Currently our telefunder likes us to include phone type with all the phone numbers we provide (home phone, cell phone, work phone...). Wondering how other organizations have set up their phone fields on the General Tab. Does "Phone 1" and "Phone 2" have a standard meaning at your organization? Do you list out specific phone types (cell, home, business...) in the secondary phone box on the general tab?
We try to keep land lines associated with addresses, and to keep a type of business, home… associated with each address and by association, each associated land line. This would in theory indicate land line to that address, but in practice, maybe not so much. These show in the top phone pane on the general tab and are associated with the address that’s showing to the left on the general tab, but we encourage staff to enter on the address tab, so it’s graphically a little more clear to them when a phone number goes with an address. Internal profile reports have this all boxed up in neat groups, but it could become problematic on a row report for an outside vendor. I’m not so sanguine that these are as much as 80% accurate.
Known cell phones are entered through the general tab (lower pane), with type, Cell Phone1 or Cell Phone2. This bears a rough relationship to the old school name1 and name2, but given some of our individuals carry/respond to multiples, and some people hand their cell phone to their spouse when a call is made… On the whole, if it says, “Cell” it probably much greater chance it is a mobile number than a land line. We also permit entry of business type and fax type (not associated with an address) in this lower pane. So for your purpose, type is probably more likely to be accurate here than those numbers associated with addresses. Who among us has never entered their cell number in a 'home' field?
