Hello all,
An interesting anomaly is happening at Pacific Symphony where many donors who were budgeted to give directly to a specific fund are now giving in the same capacity or greater but to different funds. For example, Donor X was budgeted $5,000 for Annual Fund but gave that $5,000 to the Gala this year. This movement of money results in a deficit in one line of our budget and increases in another.
Has anyone out there dealt with this issue and if so, what sorts of reporting and data manipulation have you done to explain these shortfalls and increases? Our fiscal year end is coming up and we are hoping to have positive messages to whomever questions these types of numbers.
Thank you in advance for any feedback and direction you might provide!
Ah, if only donors would do what we want them to do!
It seems to me that the important thing is that the money came in. We would never try to move money given for one appeal to another, even if both appeals are unrestricted. Rather, we just include in the notes that accompany the financial report to the Board that the Gala was unusually successful this year, making up for a shortfall in the annual fund.
