I am trying to report on Upgrades in the membership module for a specific range of time. I attempted to do so in List manager, setting criteria of membership trend "upgrade" and a contribution date range. I tried several iterations of this, and each time, the results include patrons who have not increased their gifts. Am I missing something here? Do others rely on a report, rather than lists? Or, is there some particular criteria within lists that is more accurate when it comes to this information?

I don't know if you ever figured this out, but it sounds like you need to add one more piece of information to your list: some sort of membership date. If you only put the upgrade level and the contribution date, what you'll get is a list of people who gave during your contribution dates and who EVER had a membership trend as upgrade in their entire history.
Depending on your memberships if you add initiation date or possibly status that would help narrow down the membership to a recent one. In theory.
