Soft credit to "pay" a pledge

We have a Board member who made her Board pledge a few months ago, and it was put on her record. Now, we come to find out that her parents have made an additional gift (they are already donors) in the exact amount of the pledge "In honor of.." this Board member. After speaking with them, it is their intention that this is an additional gift by them, but it is to "pay off" their daughter's pledge.

We would like to put the actual gift on the parent's record, but soft credit the board member. However, with my understanding of how soft credits usually work, this will be put on her record separate from the pledge that is already there.

Is there any way that I can attribute a soft credit to an existing pledge? or will I have to adjust out the original pledge and put the soft credit in its place? I would rather not write off the pledge since it has technically been paid, but I want the actual givers of the gift to get full credit for the gift.

(I realize that had we known this is the way that the pledge would be paid, we could have set it up as a matching gift from the get go, but we did not know, so now we have to figure out the best way to handle it).

We are still using V11

thank you!

  • Hi,

We are struggling with this too.  Ours is complicated, we have a pledge that our Volunteer Organization has made, but the payments come from all the members.  We have hundreds of small payments coming in to pay the pledge.  Since we can’t soft credit to pay the pledge, the pledge is not getting paid off.  I am interested in any solutions.

    Thanks,

    Melissa

    Hi Casey!

This is something I have been struggling with recently too. I haven't found a solution and agree with what is written below. I'd love to hear if you've learned any new solutions!

    Best of luck,

    Sara

    Hi Casey,

I believe the only way to pay off a pledge with a soft credit is to zero out the existing pledge.  Notes in the zeroed out pledge and in the credited gift will certainly help historically.

I have also had an adjustment reason added “3rd party pledge payment” as an adjustment reason  to prevent the pledge adjustment from just being written off.

Lots of notes!  It is maddening to come behind two or three seasons from now and try to recreate the story without the notes and without having been on site when something was done.
