Does anyone know what renders a contribution/membership ineligible for adjustment in contribution editor?

Yes, writing off any part of a pledge definitely causes that. If that's your situation, this thread from November has some more info on how to get around that problem.
Thanks for your replies Nick and Matthew, my issue relates to a straight-forward gift payment.
I tried Levi's suggestion in the thread - changing the cancel status to 'N' in T_CONTRIBUTION but that hasn't made a difference so I'll lodge a ticket now.

Contributions taken in orders are also not eligible to be adjusted in the contribution editor. I would confirm that the contribution was not taken in a ticketing order.
