Dealing with Soft Credits and Cont. Total in Solicitations

Hi!

We are wondering how others handle Soft Credts(Creditees) and Cont. Total in Solicitations.

When we receive a gift, for an Individaul from a Family Foundation, we enter the gift in the Foundation record and make the Individual a creditee.  The Solicitation is in the Individuals record, but since the gift is in the Family Foundation record, the Cont. Total in the Solicitation does not reflect the gift amount. In order to pull reports we would like the Cont. Total to reflect the gift amount.  Does anyone deal with this, in a way other than by putting the Solicitation in the Family Foundation record?

Thanks,  Melissa

I would love to hear if anyone has a solution to this as well. I have generally found the Solicitation "Cont Total" unreliable for that reason, but also because we frequently have major donors we cultivate with an "Undesignated" solicitation who then decide to allocate portions of their annual gift to multiple funds/designations. I don't want to make our major gifts officers create multiple solicitations for a gift we've already received just so that the contribution totals calculate correctly.

Once Solicitations become Plans in v12, you can manually link a contribution to a constituent's Plan when the contribution is entered. That should resolve my second issue, but I've experimented a little in the v12 Sandbox and as far as I can tell you still can't link a contribution to a Plan on a creditee's account, so the cont total for the creditee still won't reflect the gift.

I don't know, technically speaking, how that number gets calculated, but if it's just a number in a table somewhere it seems like somebody who's savvy with the Tessi back end ought to be able to develop a script to update it periodically with credited giving. Probably one of those things that's easier said than done, though!

We are also anxiously awaiting v12 - as we are looking to attached all different sorts of contributions to a single plan.

I've done some work in the sandbox as well - and found a possible solution for seeing plans and credits in both your individual and foundation accounts (for example).

We've moved to a process where the solicitation (plan) sits on the account where we expect to get the money (lilke a foundation, for example). In v12, when you add in the individual as part of a step (using the Associate ID) - then the plan will suddenly appear in that individual's account as well. Think of it like a "soft plan" :)

Example: If you go into the sandbox, you can see that the real plan I created is on account #70359, but it shows in accounts #70328 and #70363. These were Associate IDs added to Steps in the Plan. Merely putting in a Relationship to the foundation, nor putting an Initiator on a gift attached to the Plan does NOT get the plan in their account.

So, in short, if you can start to track solicitations in the payee account in v11, then in v12 you can add in your creditee via a step, and then see the Plan from the creditee's account. (At least that was my finding in the sandbox...)

Thanks, Beth--that's a great tip! I will definitely have to play with that some more. Issues with the cont. total aside, being able to associate others to a Plan through steps will definitely come in handy.
