Wondering if anyone out there in Tessitura land uses memberships to track donor prospects i.e. if we have prospective donors come to a free event, we want to flag this on their record as a headline item. Similarly, if constituents are not in our current donor membership structure, but come to our gala events and purchase auction items, we'd like to track that too.

I haven't tried that, but it seems like Solicitations might be a more straightforward way to track what you're after. You wouldn't have to deal with membership initiation and expiration dates that way, and you would gain the ability to track status and assign donors to solicitors. We have a couple of campaigns that we use exclusively for tracking longer term cultivation efforts via solicitations.
If having that info reflected in the header is your priority, I understand the headers can be customized to include pretty much whatever you want, so I'm sure somebody with the know-how could set you up to have a flag for anybody with a solicitation meeting whatever criteria you like. Or, you could go even simpler and just set up a "Prospect" constituency for the people you want to flag, no customization needed.
