I am setting up pledges with 12 installments with an option to pay 1st installment "now". Do I simply set up new batch with pledged, close said batch and then start a new batch with the 1st installment payment? Is there an easier way to go about doing this?
No you are entering at the same time you are creating the pledge. Whether credit card or check we often have the first payment as we take a pledge.
In our processing we have the payment module drop down prior to even putting the pledge, So it is:
1) Enter payment
2) Enter contribution with pledge amount (you will see the payment shown below
3) Set up payment schedule and you will see the first installment highlighted as paid.
4) Set up payment type and cc account if necessary
5) And of course check acknowledgments and membership as applicable.

but doesn't the batch have to be closed in order for the payment to realize it is paying the pledge i just entered?

For any of the pledges that are taking the option to pay “now” you can include that payment (assume credit card) in the same batch in which you are creating the 12 month installments. This will also mean the first installment receives the proper acknowledgment.
