Seasonal Employees on EDIAJ Team

Hello,

We've run into an issue with having seasonal FOH and contracted union production staff on our EDIAJ team.  I'm wondering if any of you have found a solution for keeping those types of staff active on your EDIAJ team while they are between contracts?

Thanks,

Kanani

  • Hi Kanani,

Is your EDIAJ team not voluntary? It seems the "solution" would be to show support by learning more about their work experiences and how it relates to the EDIAJ work of the overall organization. Find out why they are not committed to the work. At my organization, the permanent full-time staff was part of the committee, but all part-time, contracted, and full-time staff participate in leaning sessions.

  • Hi Mercedes,

Sorry, I should have explained better. They are committed to the work, but we can't figure out how to include them without violating labor laws.

Yes, it is voluntary, but we can't consider them volunteers because they are employees.  They are not allowed to continue working with the EDIAJ team while they are not employed by SCT, because of labor laws. And our MD is not willing to pay them hourly for their time during the summer because it would not be equitable to all of the other staff on other committees such as the Safety Committee.

So, I'm reaching out trying to figure out how other organizations include seasonal and contracted employees while they are technically not employees...or if they don't.  Have you run into this issue at your org?
