I missed an email from my "Women Who Code" list, so I'm not seeing until today that YESTERDAY was Black Women's Equal Pay Day. Which is strange, because EVERY day should be Black Women's Equal Pay Day.
What I didn't realize is that September 21 represents 264 days of work that it takes for a Black woman to earn the same salary as a white man for the same job in the U.S. Since 2020, this gap widened by 5 cents from 58 to 63! Black women are in the workforce at a higher rate than other ethnic groups of women, and even though numbers of Black women are increasing in the tech industry where the pay is usually higher, the wage gap is still 92 cents to every dollar. If you advocate for equal pay (and I hope you do), remember that creating career opportunities everywhere, especially in STEM fields, for Black women is imperative.
