Do you love the idea of book clubs, but struggle to find time to read the books?

Then you might enjoy our new event series called Just Show Up Book Club.

While the book club is being presented by the Neurodiversity & Mental Wellness group, we're really hoping this turns into a book club for the whole community.

And, as the name implies, no need to read the book before hand, Just Show Up!

As people in the arts and culture world, you all know that there is so much that happens in creating that hour of magic at TLCC and the team is inviting you to be part of that. Be part of the production crew or participate as an avid fan. It’s a great way to stay connected even when you can’t attend TLCC. How is the set list selected? How do you write those catchy lyrics that still make me sing “I am the querier”? (In my mind, lyric writing is akin to fan fiction!)

I was wondering if anyone has info about the graphics that was used after the band played at the TLCC closing party. It was glitchy (on purpose) aesthetic that rotated through a bunch of different states. Just curious about the tech that was used for it since I enjoyed it. :D

IHello there! I will be visiting London this July and was wondering if you could suggest a dance/ballet performance that I could attend. I am originally from the former Soviet Union and have had the pleasure of visiting the Bolshoi Theater on a number of occasions. However, it has been 35 long years since I left Moscow.
Settling into a new job, I was trying to explain the irreverent majesty that is Nerd Summer Camp1 to those of who have only seen it through rumour and the social media posts. Every time I try to explain TLCC to anyone I end up feeling like Judy Garland returning from Oz, and trying to convince her family that a magical place really exists.

From the emotional wave of ‘feels’ on social media, the dulcet tones of the Tessiturians (that majesty I was talking about), to the Campbellan journey of Jen Skelly’s lanyard2, it could seem pretty baffling. Even for those of us there it can be a lot to unpack.

On the way home I took some R&R in San Francisco while trying to wrangle my head and heart, like a parent collecting sugar fueled kids from a birthday party. With no small irony, I found some focus at a late night Jazz bar that serves (non-alcoholic) Kombucha cocktails. Yeah, I was that guy, minus the man-bun and ill advised facial hair.

Anyway I wrote some loosely SQL structured poetry over two nights, on a mini laptop at the bar (eating my vegan sliders). As I was in San Francisco (and had rewatched Mike Myers in “So I Married and Axe Murderer” again on the flight in), I went the full mile to gave it a spoken word recording. Given Andrew’s keynote unveiled his new love of great poetry I thought it'd be fun to share.

TLCC (In some ways)

In some ways,
            I'd forgotten
what TLCC was like.
Just how intense and overwhelming,
                        joyful and exciting,
                                    frightening and sad.

In some ways,
            TLCC is like
                        meeting your parallel earth doppelganger.
That person with a similar experience;
the same frustrations with "that" department;
that has won "that" personal battle
you've been fighting so long that
            you've lost the image of success;

They are that person that also struggles to be seen
45+ hours a week,
that validates all your experience.

They are your reflection,
            your potential energy,
                        your soul.

In some ways,
            It’s unsurprising
that TLCC is such
an emotional experience.

communitytest.tessitura.com/.../In-some-ways_2D00_NR.mp3

[1] aka TLCC

[2] I’ve talked to my therapist extensively about the existential dread of wondering at the fate of Jen Skelly’s lanyard outside of the bubble that is pre-during-post conference that borders on the nature of quantum mechanics. Nietzsche said that we should live life as if the material world was all we could know, but if Jen Skelly’s lanyard only exists in the boundaries of a relative conference bubble, what is the fate of its existence post conference? Is there a post conference at all? Could all the lingering feels that we have post conference be the first evidence of quantum superposition in social media. Scary stuff.

[3] I really don’t agree. I see art everywhere. Art is in the person not the job. Like Jack (Rubin) said everyone is a little bit manager and a little bit leader in differing ratios. Punching out into the great blue yonder and mapping the path behind.

[4] not that I think Andrew is “ordinaryifying” Lao Tzu, at least that’s not his primary point. Regardless, I think that Lao Tzu who was aware of the conundrum first, and in essence, was setting himself up. I imagine he’s giggling at his clever joke still.

[5] and saviour and idol

I’ll be visiting Vienna for a few weeks at the end of the year (mid-late December) and am looking to see as many shows as I can manage. Are there any Tessitura users working in Vienna venues that could recommend some things?
I am planning on staying after and adding a Colorado 14,000 foot peak to my hiking list. My plan is to head up into mountain on Thursday and hike up Torreys Peak or Grays (sometimes people do both) on Saturday the 20th or as a backup Friday if the weather looks better. If someone wants to join me I would be happy to meet at the trailhead or even have someone join me at my campsite. I am bringing my tent and sleeping gear but am planning on stopping by REI if someone wanted to join me and rent gear.

Recommendations are to arrive at trailhead around 4am to get parking or camp at the trailhead. It is a 8 mile round trip hike if you just do one of the peaks. If it would be your first 14er we can chat, I can let you know what to expect.

If anyone is interested let me know and we can figure out if we can make logistics work.

A lively love story based on commedia dell’arte, Harlequinade was created in 1900 by Marius Petipa, who choreographed some of classical ballet’s most enduring works, including Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty. Working with the original notation of Petipa’s choreography, Alexei Ratmansky, former director of the Bolshoi Ballet and artist in residence at American Ballet Theatre, has produced a loving and humorous revival.

This performance is full of dance, joy and feel-good vibes, a perfect recipe for those wanting to sit back and relax for a couple of hours. Tickets are $25 AUD only.
Date: Thursday, April 15
Time: 11am-12pm EDT | 8-9am PDT | 4-5pm BST

Now, more than ever, people are seeking to increase their personal and professional resilience. This session will explore resiliency through the lens of flexibility, change, and growth. Carmel Cardona will share her framework for practicing resiliency, along with understanding how to equip your teams with knowledge and practical strategies to build their own strength and adaptability.

Carmel is the founder of Stitch Your Parachute. She delivers training courses and 1:1 coaching in resilience, leadership, and professional wellbeing. Prior to this, she worked in leadership roles within the Tessitura community for over two decades, in the UK and Australia, including Sydney Theatre Company, British Film Institute, and the Roundhouse. Carmel has an MSc in Social Science, and has trained with the NeuroLeadership Institute and the European Mentoring and Coaching Council.

Led by our European team, but open to all members of our community, this week of virtual events will include opportunities to learn, gain insight, find inspiration and celebrate our community.

Whilst it’s disappointing we can’t meet in person, meeting up virtually is a great way to chat to people you don’t normally get to, as well as learn and share ideas across our global community. As part of the week we have plenty of opportunities to get together informally:

Virtual networking - Coaching conversations for leaders

Monday 7 December, 12pm EDT/5pm GMT

As leaders we know we need to focus on developing our teams but how often do we feel that the day to day means you don’t have the time, capacity or the perceived skill required to coach them? In this informal and conversational session, we will learn that coaching your team simply means providing them with a view of the future and helping them get the tools to obtain it on their own.

Register in advance

Tuesday 8 December, 12pm EDT/5pm GMT

The Women in Tech Tessitura Community is dedicated to women and non-binary people in the technology field. Join them for their monthly meetup, to discuss issues that matter most to you, and make connections with group members across the globe.

Tessiturians Watch Party

Wednesday 9 December, 1pm EDT/6pm GMT

The Tessiturians is the Tessitura Network Community's rock band known for performing songs with fun, silly and alternative lyrics about the world of Tessitura. Join us as we gather to view newly-created, socially-distanced music videos celebrating the resilience and creativity of our community.

Long story, but my best friend lives in Honolulu and is getting married in early October. Thanks to the pandemic, she already had to scrap her planned reception for a small (max 7 people) elopement, and she got a permit for beach usage to have that ceremony - but now, with the new closures going into effect, it's not clear if even that will be allowed, and she's completely frantic with the uncertainty of not being able to make any specific plans. She's a relatively recent transplant and doesn't have a lot of network or connections in Hawaii, so I'm asking my network: does anyone have any suggestions for somewhere on Oahu that these half a dozen people could reliably go to hold a small, responsible ceremony without violating any regulations or safety precautions? Do you know of any hotels or restaurants that are allowed to be open and would accommodate them? Do you know someone with a backyard who wouldn't mind a few strangers in their shrubbery for an hour? I know this is a long shot, but as her Maid of Honor, I'm feeling pretty derelict in my duties, so I'll turn over every stone!

TLCC Virtual 5k on Wednesday Aug 5

Hi everyone!

One of my personal favorite TLCC activities is the TLCC 5k (3.1mi)

Even though the in-person conference is dark this year, I want to help keep the light of TLCC shining bright with a Run for Arts and Culture virtual 5k.

Since we typically run on Wednesday during the conference, we'll do the virtual run on Wednesday, August 5 at whatever local time you can get out and walk or run.

Once you've completed your walk or run, upload a photo of you and/or your route using this survey:

https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/5740677/2020TLCCRun

Bonus points if your route looks like a "T" or a full "TLCC!"

Even though we can't be together, let's join together in unity around the business of Arts and Culture and keep this tradition alive.

We'll compile the photos and send a photo collage of the whole group to remember this year's TLCC Run for Arts and Culture!

Spread the word and lets see how many people we can get out to run or walk!

Thanks

I'm really interested in how our organisations are using our neurodiverse strengths to inform the options we offer out audiences and consumers. And also how we use our diversity to strengthen us internally. I'm lucky that I'm at a company that celebrates and accepts difference (my CEO actually recommended the psychology clinic I ended up at). There were a few topics on the TLCC agenda (spoiler alert) about how we approach mental wellness and neurodiversity in our work - both for out patrons and for our peers. In lieu of TLCC I'd like to ask what have been your approaches, and your organisations, to celebrating and accommodating neurodiversity and enabling our art.

Hoping that you all are doing ok in lockdown. As always I'm here if you need me.

COVID-19 Mental Wellness checkin: How are you doing?

Hi folks,

Wanted to drop a line to see how you are doing in these crazy times.

There is a naturally lot of uncertainty and anxiety both in our organisations and personally especially as the rules are still shifting out there. Some people are adjusting to work at home - some are scoping out the situation - others are adjusting in other ways. This can put little strain on relationships with friends and family.

I'm interested in how you are managing this ...

as an organisation

as a manager

as yourself

For me it's important to have my support network on speed dial / Skype / Zoom / Crystal-Ball. Also good for me to list what support network I have. So if you feel the need to reach out at anytime please do so (I'm pretty easy to find on most networks as heathwilder). Stay safe out there and remember to be proud of all the great work you are doing.

Just wanted to check in with all of you re: how you are holding up post TLCC2019 or at home if you couldn't attend.

I had a plethora of amazing conversations about organisational culture and personal mental health and wellness and how incredibly important it is for work and home. We are so much more effective when we are at our best (many studies to back throes l this up).

In our Own Space on "How do you start the conversation on Anxiety, Depression, Mental Health and Wellness" we covered a lot of ground and I'd like to pop some references down here that i mentioned.

If I'm not sure where to start with all the incredible learnings I recieved i like to start with our own Mary French's TNINSPIRE from 2017 https://youtu.be/GsrNDbN-F94

I also mentioned being a big fan of organisational psychologist Adam Grant https://www.adamgrant.net/worklife

Look forward to hearing from you. And remember if you need anything or just want to chat email me at heathw@sydneydancecompany.com

Cheers

Heath
