Translation options for website?

Hello! This is really not a Tessitura-related question, but hoping to get some ideas from the hive mind here.

We're in the middle of a website redesign, and would really like to offer a translation option. Spanish is a strong second language in our area, but certainly not the only one, so I'd like to find a multi-language option. Budget-wise, we need to be looking at a plugin option, rather than a full translation service.

I recognize that Google Translate isn't perfect, but is it the best option out there? If not, what do you recommend we consider?

This is my first post of all Tess forums, so I am excited to hear responses in the Tessitura community! We are looking to add a customer service training video with all of our ticket sales associates. Is there a customer service training video that any of your organizations use that are inclusive, relative, and interesting for people to stay present while in training, but also work well within in ticketing situations (as we know can be quite stressful at times). Burnout Log

Sorry to make this a separate post but I'm hoping this will stand out. I was combing through the Tessitura Network forums a few weeks ago and saw in a thread someone reference creating what they called a "Burnout Log" for their front of house staff. I believe in particular it was for museum staff? It had started some research on my end and I'm hoping to connect with the person who had shared those details but cannot find the thread where it was posted. If this sounds like something you posted, or that your organization does let me know and I'd love to check in directly to ask some questions about your process.

Tessitura offers a ten-week Career Accelerator program with the long-term goal of increasing racial and ethnic diversity in the business of arts and culture. In addition to hands-on experience using Tessitura’s CRM platform, participants will join a community of colleagues and mentors providing support and professional networking, and secure access to a library of training materials to expand their knowledge of Tessitura.

Our spring session, which is open by application only, will run from February 19 – April 26, 2024 and is offered free of charge. A selection committee of Tessitura staff will select up to 24 participants from among the submitted applications.

To be eligible for this program, applicants must:

Be located in North America
Be at least 18 years of age
Identify as a member of a racial or ethnic group that has been historically excluded from the arts and culture sector
Be interested in beginning or accelerating a career in the business of arts and culture
Be able to commit up to three hours per week during the program for self-paced online learning, group conversations, and small group mentoring sessions

Including frontline staff in an Audience Behaviour campaign

Hello lovely fellow Tessiturians.

This month through our two venues in Southampton, England - Mayflower Theatre and MAST Mayflower Studios, we launched a campaign to combat poor audience behaviour.

The idea for this new campaign was born after seeing an uptick in audience behaviour issues in other venues across the country. We brought together an internal working group which included representatives from across the organisation, including Front of House staff, artistic and executive leadership and our marketing team. We decided to lead with images of our real staff members with messaging around behaviour to bring back the human face to the campaign. We wanted to take a proactive initiative to remind our customers of the friendly faces of our organisation, what they do, and most importantly, that they’re human and doing their best to ensure that all customers have the most enjoyable experience possible. The campaign runs with two taglines "See the show - don't be the show" and "There's no excuse for abuse" Alongside a PR launch, and full media campaign, the images are being used on social media, pre-visit emails, physical posters around the building and on digital screens. We even have new badges containing the taglines for all staff to wear. We have had so much positive feedback from our teams following the launch and they feel empowered by being involved in the campaign.

Tips for preventing burnout in your guest facing and guest engaging teammates.

Good friends! Hello! I manage guest engagement for Marbles Kids Museum in Raleigh, North Carolina. I’m curious to hear from others. In what ways do your organizations practice the prevention of burnout and provide a greater sense of value for all teammates, but specifically for those in the direct line of fire during daily operations. I personally want to ensure that my hourly employees feel seen, valued and heard and I’d love to know all of the ways that we all go about doing this. Over the last year, I’ve been leading incredibly effective empathetic team talks called Clumsy conversations. These talks have been powerful so much that I’ve been doing them for other organizations and conferences. In these chats we’ve covered toxic positivity and the expectations that we place on hourly part time teammates to perform with excellence, deal with difficult guest interactions, and keep the museum in great shape. I’m open to your ideas… thoughts to help me and anyone else reading learn more ways to honor those teammates and prove it in our actions.

Service animals vs comfort animals policy

Hi friends! I'm writing because I'm wondering how other venues policies surrounding comfort animals vs service animals work.

We have a clear policy on welcoming service animals. Our policy with comfort animals has been a customer friendly policy in that we allow patrons in with their comfort animal but let them know we may need to reseat them or ask them to leave if any disturbance occurs with their animal or other patrons.

The other evening we had a patron attend with what seemed to be a pet.. though they were adamant it was a comfort animal.. is there any way of obtaining verification of when an animal is a certified Comfort animal vs a pet? I don't want to have to change our policy to not allowing comfort animals in, but also know that it may be difficult to properly identify comfort vs pet... Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Audio Description equipment and processes

Hello lovely people! Greetings from Hobart, where I'm the Accessibility Project Coordinator for Mona (the Museum of Old and New Art) and its festivals.

We're investigating providing audio description for a contemporary dance performance for Mona Foma 2024 and I'm looking around to see what equipment is being used in venues and organisations.

Audio description is fairly new in Tasmania but there is demand in our blind community especially. A group of six performing and visual arts professionals, including me, are being trained and mentored by experienced describer Clare Spillman, who originally trained and worked in the UK.

If anyone has insights into the best equipment for description, I'd love to hear your thoughts! The performance in 2024 will be in a 750 seat theatre. The largest indoor performance venue in Tasmania is a 5,500 person arena.

English and Spanish bilingual website?

Hi everyone - we're looking to make our entire website bilingual in English and Spanish, has anyone done this before?

Ideally there is a single button/toggle that presents the page in each language (without using GoogleTranslate). I'm inspired by the website from our neighbors at Gala Hispanic Theatre but they don't use Tessitura.

It's not currently a TNEW functionality so I've seen this as a suggestion on the Ideas board, but I wanted to see if anyone had any successful workarounds? Do you all have any solutions for a bilingual website?

For our current Spanish offerings we include a translation of the content on the TNEW page, but we're interested in EVERYTHING being properly translated across the entire website. Our website developers can handle some of the static content, but we're struggling to figure out a solution for the TNEW side of things.

Let me know if you've found any workarounds or how you've done something like this on your website!

Windows Magnifier Issues

Hi all!

I have a ticket in with support already to discuss some issues one of our staff members is having using Window Magnifier with Tessitura, but I am wondering if anyone has any info or insight about using Windows Magnifier or other magnifying tools.

When using Windows Magnifier (at any magnification), trying to do anything with an account or affect an order (other than selling in Quicksale), the application shuts down.

Has anyone else experienced this or found any solutions?

Sensory Trigger Warnings

Hi everyone! We're currently in a bit of a dilemma as to whether to include sensory warnings (some loud sounds) for our percussion concerts. We'd like to be more transparent about what our audiences can expect in our concerts, but a few of my colleagues are worried that this may 'scare' away potential audience members – the argument here is that there are more quiet moments than loud ones. For context, these concerts are in a fairly small, intimate space. We will be providing earplugs and plan on communicating this.

I'd love to hear about everyone's thoughts on this, as well as your practice around trigger warnings and how you'd word/present the information so that it's representative of the experience? Thank you!

Affordable access and editable pricing

DEAI Land Acknowledgement Guide

Hi folks,

Publicly acknowledging first nations people and traditional custodians of the land we meet on has been a part of TLCC for many years and becoming more common in other gathering spaces where we meet around the world. But what are Land Acknowledgements and what is their purpose?

What are Land Acknowledgments?

Land acknowledgments are a way to primarily show that indigenous communities still exist today and to pay respects for the original stewards of the land.

These resources may be useful in learning more about the importance of land acknowledgements and provide useful information for making a meaningful land acknowledgement.

In Australia we have both a Welcome to Country delivered by traditional owners, and Acknowledgement of Country which is offered by any person as a statement of respect. It’s very important to note that the rules are not universal and different

Welcome to Country (Australia)

In Australia a Welcome to Country is performed by traditional owners on the land where an event takes place. Welcome statements are not universal and it’s important where you are to respect the people and their culture.

From Reconciliation Australia:

Protocols for welcoming visitors to Country have always been a part of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. Boundaries were clear, and crossing into another group’s Country required a request for permission to enter.^[1]

Yuin man Jade Kennedy speaks further on the meaning of Welcome to Country^[2]

“When I welcome you - when our Aunties and Uncles welcome you - we are welcoming you to a place. But we’re actually welcoming you to the intimate relationship we have to that place. We’re also welcoming you to our kin. We’re welcoming you to the significant relationships we have with the people of our place. We’re welcoming you to our roles, responsibilities and obligations, that keep us connected and bound through these people, to our place.” - Yuin man Jade Kennedy^[3].

Land acknowledgment / Acknowledgment of Country

A Land acknowledgment, also known as Acknowledgement of Country in Australia, is an opportunity for anyone to offer a statement of respect to the traditional owners and custodians on the land in which they are meeting.

How do I “do” an acknowledgment?

It’s important to get some knowledge and first nations people have some great advice

Native Governance Center^[4] has a lot of great tips starting with self-reflection, homework on history and names, using authentic language and remembering that first nations people are present and future.

If you want to know what land you are on Native Land Digital^[5] and Whose Land^[6] are Canadian based NFP mapping traditional lands around the world onto a digital globe. In Australia AIATSIS has a map of traditional lands^[7].

Common Ground in Australia^[2] have a handy checklist

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT CHECKLIST

Name and acknowledge the specific Country/Nation/language group.
Identify the Traditional Custodians and their continued connection to their land/s.
Thank the Traditional Custodians for caring for Country for thousands of generations.
Make your Acknowledgement specific to place: are you on desert Country? Are you on an island? Are there any sacred sites with traditional names you can mention?
Pay respect to the Elders and Ancestors of the Country you are on, and also to any First Nations people present/listening.
Recognise that First Nations sovereignty was never ceded. This continent always was and always will be Aboriginal land.

What is important moving forward

Compensate Indigenous people for their emotional labour^[4]

Land acknowledgment is a good first step on the road to reconciliation. Think about what your next course of action is^[4].

“Connecting with an Elder or Traditional Owner can sometimes be a complex process. Following cultural protocol is important and may include allowing time for customary decision-making and discussion among traditional custodians.”^[2]

For 2023, we will seat 4 new members on the committee to join 4 current members from our 2022 advisory committee. We are also looking for representation from Europe and Australia/New Zealand, as well (as part of the 4 new members).

Committee members serve a two-year term and are expected to:

Attend four quarterly two-hour meetings per year
Respond to group emails
Participate in DEAI content curation and/or creation meetings, as needed
Participate in Tessitura affinity groups, as a co-chair of a group or active participant
Monitor the DEAI Forum and respond to forum posts
Agree to and follow our code of conduct

Compensation for time and emotional labor will be US$500 per year, paid bi-annually. To learn more about the advisory committee’s aims and structure, please review our charter.
