Our industry faces challenges of representation and one that opera faces a lot is the challenge of presenting intimate partner violence in its stories. Our fall production of Don Giovanni digs into this very issue, so we are holding a panel disuccsion with Artists from the production, staff from a center which provides resources to survivors, and other experts in the field. We will disucss how this issue is presented in the arts and how it impacts our society at large. RSVP>> ABOUT THE EVENT Mozart’s Don Giovanni premiered in 1787, but presenting this classic piece to an audience in 2023, especially in the wake of the #MeToo movement, requires a closer examination of some of the behaviors taken in this opera. The story follows a serial womanizer, Don Giovanni, as he wreaks havoc across Spain, while the women he jilted and abused, Donna Anna and Donna Elvira, work to bring him to justice. We see many of Don Giovanni’s problematic behaviors towards these women in our society today as well. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, one in four women and one in nine men experience severe intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner contact, sexual violence, and/or intimate partner stalking. In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, we will be having an open discussion about how these difficult topics are presented in art, what they say about our society, and what kind of resources intimate partner violence survivors have.
