TLCC DC Reminders!

As a reminder there are two TLCC-based opportunities with deadlines closing in!

CALL FOR TLCC PRESENTERS

All are welcome to submit presentation proposals, no matter your experience with Tessitura. Presenters will receive a 25% discount on the conference registration fee, and support will be available to help you prepare your presentation. Session proposals are due by Wednesday, 10 April. Learn more and submit your ideas.

APPLY FOR A TLCC SCHOLARSHIP

Tessitura is offering 10 scholarships for TLCC 2024 in Washington, DC, including seven Diversity Scholarships and three Emerging Leaders Scholarships.

Scholars will be awarded complimentary conference registration. This includes:

All sessions
All networking events
All conference meals and refreshment breaks (except Tuesday evening, which is a build-your-own networking night)
Access to conference materials and presentations

Scholars will be responsible for their own travel expenses and lodging.

All applications and letters of recommendation must be received by April 17, 2024. The Scholarship Committee will notify all candidates about its decision by May 10, 2024.

Virtual Viewing Pass option:

A Virtual Viewing Pass will include live access to all general sessions and 48 concurrent breakout sessions, as well as recordings of those sessions.

Life Update/New Role/Thank You!

Hello, Friends.

I wanted to share some news with you all. This Friday is my final day at New York City Center and my last day as one of your Tessitura Community co-chairs. I have recently accepted the Senior Manager of Individual Giving role at the Apollo in New York City.

Tessitura has been a prominent fixture in my professional life for three years. I am a proud alum of the Career Accelerator Program (formerly the Early Career Development program). I served two full years as a Community DEAI Advisory Committee member, and last but not least, I have pridefully served this community as a co-chair since 2021. I even presented for the first time at TLCC Orlando last year. I am grateful for all the connections I made, the work I could contribute to, and the space I could create. Thank you!

As I venture into the uncharted territories, I will carry the spirit of this community with me. Tessitura or not, may we all find spaces of belonging. Creating this culture is a shared responsibility. By fostering a sense of belonging, we can build a stronger, more cohesive community that thrives on collaboration, innovation, and success.

Hi friends,

I wanted to introduce myself as the People of Color Tessitura Community’s new Co-Chair. I’m Kaylee (pronounced KAH-lee, like “Cali” in California) and am currently the Education Manager for Data and Career Development at Roundabout Theatre Company in New York City. I’ve been with Roundabout for a bit over a year, but have lived in New York City for almost five years and have three years of professional experience using Tessitura.

I’ve worked in the arts administration industry on and off for the last eight years and have found community with other BIPOC folks to be essential to my professional growth and satisfaction. It’s safe to say that I have years up my belt of being the “one” on my team, or “one of a few” in the entire organization. I’m immensely thankful to my mentors and colleagues of color who have supported my journey in the industry and have made me feel less alone. As part of the planning team for this group, I’m excited to facilitate more opportunities for us to connect so that more of these sustaining and fulfilling relationships can grow.

That all being said, I’m excited to share some upcoming events with y’all for February:

Calling all New Yorkers – In-person Jonah Night on February 29

Since two Co-Chairs (Corey Smith and myself) of this group are currently based in NYC, we wanted to offer an in-person opportunity to convene over a night of networking and live theatre. You are invited to a reception at a bar in Midtown from 5:30 – 6:30 PM, and the 7PM show of Jonah. You may attend either or both. Please note that Jonah is an emotionally intense and potentially triggering play – please review the content advisory closely before deciding to attend.

Dear Community,

As we enter February, Black History Month takes center stage. More than just a celebration, this month serves as a vital opportunity to reflect on the profound contributions of Black Americans to our nation's history, culture, and society. In 2024, this reflection feels particularly important.

This year's theme, "African Americans and the Arts," shines a light on Black individuals' undeniable impact across all artistic expressions. From music and literature to film and fashion, Black artistry has shaped American culture and served as a powerful tool for resistance, resilience, and storytelling.

However, acknowledging these contributions cannot exist in a vacuum. We must also confront the ongoing struggles for racial justice and equality that continue to affect Black communities today. By delving into Black history, we gain a deeper understanding of the systemic challenges faced by generations past and present. This understanding paves the way for meaningful action toward a more equitable future.

Here are some ways we can all engage with Black History Month in 2024:

Educate yourself: Explore the rich tapestry of Black history and culture. Read books by Black authors, listen to Black music, watch documentaries, and visit museums showcasing Black art and artifacts.
Support Black-owned businesses: Seek out and patronize local Black-owned businesses, artists, and creators.
Engage in open and honest conversations: Talk to friends, family, and colleagues about race, racism, and how we can work together to dismantle systemic barriers.
Advocate for change: Support organizations working towards racial justice and equality. Contact your elected officials and urge them to enact policies that address systemic inequities.

Black History Month is not just about looking back; it's about using the lessons of the past to shape a more just and equitable future. By actively engaging with this month's themes, we can all contribute to building a society where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.

Happy 2024, Friends!

The confetti has settled, and we're turning off all those Out-of-Office notifications to find ourselves standing at the threshold of a brand-new year. 2023 is now a memory, tucked away in the dusty corners of our minds, and before us lies the vast, uncharted territory of 2024.

As we step into 2024, let's carry a spirit of unity with us. Let's continue to be there for each other, to offer support and encouragement, and to celebrate each other's successes. Let's make this a year of greater collaboration, pushing boundaries, and exploring new horizons together.

Here are some professional/work-related resolutions I have for this year:

Do a better job of setting boundaries between my work and personal life. This means not checking work emails after hours or on weekends.
Using my PTO! I'm always waiting for a vacation to use my PTO, but I genuinely don't need a vacation for an off day.
Presenting and Sharing my expertise more. Last year, I presented at TLCC Orlando, and it was a great experience. I'm looking to share my knowledge again in a workshop or conference setting this year.

I am excited to see what the future holds for our community. I do not doubt that, with your passion, your dedication, and your unwavering support, we can achieve incredible things together.

So, from the bottom of my heart, I wish you all a very happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year. May 2024 be filled with joy, laughter, and the fulfillment of all your dreams.

Prioritizing Self-Care

Hello friends,

I wanted to share with you that after much consideration, I’ve decided to step away from my role as Director of Marketing & Communications at Hartford Stage. My final day with the company will be November 16.

It took several months of deliberation and consideration from every angle to come to this decision, but ultimately, I just need a break to protect myself. It's been too many years of going at full speed (and then some) so I'm eager to take a few months to rest, heal, and re-focus on my priorities. I don’t know what my next career move will be – I'm very open to exploring other options. All I know right now is that if we don’t take care of ourselves when we’re on the edge of burnout, our bodies will eventually force us to stop in a way beyond our control. I’m doing my best to get ahead of that.

I say that in a word of caution to this community in particular. I know so many of have shared experiences; we may have (especially recently) been invited into a lot of new rooms and given a lot of (very justified and long-deserved!) praise for our work, but eventually it forces us into a position where we’re spread too thin, not being compensated enough for our expertise, or not being able to create a live for ourselves outside of these non-profit roles that drain so much of our passion. That might, of course, not be your experience at all – so please disregard if you feel that’s not applicable to your situation. But if it is and you want to talk more, I invite the conversation. Let’s make sure we’re protecting each other and ourselves. <3

I've loved getting to be a part of this group and spending time with a handful of you on a 1-on-1 basis. Thank you for your wisdom, your love, your encouragement, your dedication. Y'all are the best.
