As a reminder there are two TLCC-based opportunities with deadlines closing in!

CALL FOR TLCC PRESENTERS

All are welcome to submit presentation proposals, no matter your experience with Tessitura. Presenters will receive a 25% discount on the conference registration fee, and support will be available to help you prepare your presentation. Session proposals are due by Wednesday, 10 April. Learn more and submit your ideas.

APPLY FOR A TLCC SCHOLARSHIP

Tessitura is offering 10 scholarships for TLCC 2024 in Washington, DC, including seven Diversity Scholarships and three Emerging Leaders Scholarships.

Scholars will be awarded complimentary conference registration. This includes:

All sessions
All networking events
All conference meals and refreshment breaks (except Tuesday evening, which is a build-your-own networking night)
Access to conference materials and presentations

Scholars will be responsible for their own travel expenses and lodging.

All applications and letters of recommendation must be received by April 17, 2024. The Scholarship Committee will notify all candidates about its decision by May 10, 2024.

Life Update/New Role/Thank You!

Hello, Friends.

I wanted to share some news with you all. This Friday is my final day at New York City Center and my last day as one of your Tessitura Community co-chairs. I have recently accepted the Senior Manager of Individual Giving role at the Apollo in New York City.

Tessitura has been a prominent fixture in my professional life for three years. I am a proud alum of the Career Accelerator Program (formerly the Early Career Development program). I served two full years as a Community DEAI Advisory Committee member, and last but not least, I have pridefully served this community as a co-chair since 2021. I even presented for the first time at TLCC Orlando last year. I am grateful for all the connections I made, the work I could contribute to, and the space I could create. Thank you!

As I venture into the uncharted territories, I will carry the spirit of this community with me. Tessitura or not, may we all find spaces of belonging. Creating this culture is a shared responsibility. By fostering a sense of belonging, we can build a stronger, more cohesive community that thrives on collaboration, innovation, and success.

Hi friends,

I wanted to introduce myself as the People of Color Tessitura Community’s new Co-Chair. I’m Kaylee (pronounced KAH-lee, like “Cali” in California) and am currently the Education Manager for Data and Career Development at Roundabout Theatre Company in New York City. I’ve been with Roundabout for a bit over a year, but have lived in New York City for almost five years and have three years of professional experience using Tessitura.

I’ve worked in the arts administration industry on and off for the last eight years and have found community with other BIPOC folks to be essential to my professional growth and satisfaction. It’s safe to say that I have years up my belt of being the “one” on my team, or “one of a few” in the entire organization. I’m immensely thankful to my mentors and colleagues of color who have supported my journey in the industry and have made me feel less alone. As part of the planning team for this group, I’m excited to facilitate more opportunities for us to connect so that more of these sustaining and fulfilling relationships can grow.

That all being said, I’m excited to share some upcoming events with y’all for February:

Calling all New Yorkers – In-person Jonah Night on February 29

Since two Co-Chairs (Corey Smith and myself) of this group are currently based in NYC, we wanted to offer an in-person opportunity to convene over a night of networking and live theatre. You are invited to a reception at a bar in Midtown from 5:30 – 6:30 PM, and the 7PM show of Jonah. You may attend either or both. Please note that Jonah is an emotionally intense and potentially triggering play – please review the content advisory closely before deciding to attend.

Celebrating Black History Month!

Dear Community,

As we enter February, Black History Month takes center stage. More than just a celebration, this month serves as a vital opportunity to reflect on the profound contributions of Black Americans to our nation's history, culture, and society. In 2024, this reflection feels particularly important.

This year's theme, "African Americans and the Arts," shines a light on Black individuals' undeniable impact across all artistic expressions. From music and literature to film and fashion, Black artistry has shaped American culture and served as a powerful tool for resistance, resilience, and storytelling.

However, acknowledging these contributions cannot exist in a vacuum. We must also confront the ongoing struggles for racial justice and equality that continue to affect Black communities today. By delving into Black history, we gain a deeper understanding of the systemic challenges faced by generations past and present. This understanding paves the way for meaningful action toward a more equitable future.

Here are some ways we can all engage with Black History Month in 2024:

Educate yourself: Explore the rich tapestry of Black history and culture. Read books by Black authors, listen to Black music, watch documentaries, and visit museums showcasing Black art and artifacts.
Support Black-owned businesses: Seek out and patronize local Black-owned businesses, artists, and creators.
Engage in open and honest conversations: Talk to friends, family, and colleagues about race, racism, and how we can work together to dismantle systemic barriers.
Advocate for change: Support organizations working towards racial justice and equality. Contact your elected officials and urge them to enact policies that address systemic inequities.

Black History Month is not just about looking back; it's about using the lessons of the past to shape a more just and equitable future. By actively engaging with this month's themes, we can all contribute to building a society where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.

Happy 2024, Friends!

The confetti has settled, and we're turning off all those Out-of-Office notifications to find ourselves standing at the threshold of a brand-new year. 2023 is now a memory, tucked away in the dusty corners of our minds, and before us lies the vast, uncharted territory of 2024.

As we step into 2024, let's carry a spirit of unity with us. Let's continue to be there for each other, to offer support and encouragement, and to celebrate each other's successes. Let's make this a year of greater collaboration, pushing boundaries, and exploring new horizons together.

Here are some professional/work-related resolutions I have for this year:

Do a better job of setting boundaries between my work and personal life. This means not checking work emails after hours or on weekends.
Using my PTO! I'm always waiting for a vacation to use my PTO, but I genuinely don't need a vacation for an off day.
Presenting and Sharing my expertise more. Last year, I presented at TLCC Orlando, and it was a great experience. I'm looking to share my knowledge again in a workshop or conference setting this year.

I am excited to see what the future holds for our community. I do not doubt that, with your passion, your dedication, and your unwavering support, we can achieve incredible things together.

So, from the bottom of my heart, I wish you all a very happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year. May 2024 be filled with joy, laughter, and the fulfillment of all your dreams.

Prioritizing Self-Care

Hello friends,

I wanted to share with you that after much consideration, I’ve decided to step away from my role as Director of Marketing & Communications at Hartford Stage. My final day with the company will be November 16.

It took several months of deliberation and consideration from every angle to come to this decision, but ultimately, I just need a break to protect myself. It's been too many years of going at full speed (and then some) so I'm eager to take a few months to rest, heal, and re-focus on my priorities. I don’t know what my next career move will be – I'm very open to exploring other options. All I know right now is that if we don’t take care of ourselves when we’re on the edge of burnout, our bodies will eventually force us to stop in a way beyond our control. I’m doing my best to get ahead of that.

I say that in a word of caution to this community in particular. I know so many of have shared experiences; we may have (especially recently) been invited into a lot of new rooms and given a lot of (very justified and long-deserved!) praise for our work, but eventually it forces us into a position where we’re spread too thin, not being compensated enough for our expertise, or not being able to create a live for ourselves outside of these non-profit roles that drain so much of our passion. That might, of course, not be your experience at all – so please disregard if you feel that’s not applicable to your situation. But if it is and you want to talk more, I invite the conversation. Let’s make sure we’re protecting each other and ourselves. <3

I've loved getting to be a part of this group and spending time with a handful of you on a 1-on-1 basis. Thank you for your wisdom, your love, your encouragement, your dedication. Y'all are the best.

We are seeking a volunteer to join us as a Community Chair and co-lead the People of Color Tessitura Community alongside Carlos García León and . You’ll be surprised by the impact you can have on people’s lives, careers, and institutions!

The Role

Tessitura members come to community groups to expand their networks, share their expertise, and connect with peers around common interests. Community Chairs volunteer their time to build and lead these groups, and host meetups that bring members together to share best practices and build relationships. You'll:

- develop and refine critical leadership skills
- build valuable new networks
- take back tangible ideas and learnings to your work
- access training and professional development opportunities
- be recognized for your contribution internally at Tessitura and in the wider community

Each Community Group is led by 2-3 co-chairs. Previous experience in group management or facilitation is not required. Tessitura provides initial onboarding, followed by on-going support and various resources. These include a dedicated Community Manager and invitations to events led by the community team, enabling you to connect with our other 100+ Community Chairs globally.

TLCC Melbourne is right around the corner! Attendees are invited to participate in the People of Colour lunch meetup on Friday 3 November from 1:30-2:30pm. Join our affinity group lunch to connect and share ideas with other individuals who identify as the following: Black or African descent; Hispanic or Latino; Asian; Multi-racial or ethnic with more than one of the above groups. We acknowledge intersectionality and welcome those who identify as LGBTQIA+ and all genders.

Invitation: Lincoln Center Education Open House

Hi everyone!

I wanted to put this event on your radars: We are we inviting kids, teens, families, artists and teachers to Lincoln Center Education’s Open House on Sunday, October 29, where we will explore the fascinating intersection of arts and digital technology, and invite all into an accessible day of discovery, artmaking, and creativity.

This event is free and open to all with no ticket required; kids, families and attendees (yes, you!) are encouraged to dress in Halloween costumes if so inclined, and a many requisite treats and delights will be available at art stations throughout David Geffen Hall.

If you need additional highlights to make the event’s case to the kids and teens in your life, they include:

visual arts stations
guided workshops on animation, beat making, and filmmaking
a live kick-off recording of Art Class, a brand-new podcast covering the latest innovations in the arts and arts education
a dedicated chill out space, for guests to take a sensory break between activities

I want to highlight one workshop in particular for this group, "Second Class" for teachers & arts leaders. This workshop explores the question, "How can we provide BIPOC, non-binary, femme, and LGBTQIA+ artists with tools and safe spaces to navigate colonized and gender-biased landscapes in artistic fields?"

2024 Community DEAI Advisory Committee applications are open!

Hey, all! I hope everyone is well!

Today, the application period for the Community DEAI Advisory Committee is open!

I proudly served two terms on the Advisory Committee. It was an enlightening experience. I got to share my views on the current state of arts/culture, be a voice for the POC affinity group, and have an impact within Tessitura.

For 2024, Tessitura will seat 4 new members on the committee to join 4 current members (Chloe Burton, Clayton Dickson, Carlos García León, and Shenette Swan). They are seeking a broad range of representation and lived experiences, including a representative from Australia/New Zealand, to join us in this work.

Commitment

Committee members will serve a two-year term beginning in January 2024. Members are expected to:

Attend and contribute to six meetings held bi-monthly each year (length of meetings ranges from 90 minutes to two hours)
Respond to group emails and collaborate asynchronously in online forms and documents
Participate in DEAI content curation and/or creation meetings
Participate in Tessitura affinity groups as a co-chair of a group or active participant
Monitor the DEAI Forum and respond to forum posts
Agree to and follow our code of conduct for community leaders
Compensation for time and emotional labor will be US$500 per year, paid bi-annually. To learn more about the advisory committee’s aims and structure, please review our charter.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the advisory committee, members must:

Be an employee at a Tessitura member organization
Have participated in the Tessitura community for at least six months. This could involve contributing to forum discussions, attending community group events, and/or attending a Tessitura Learning & Community Conference
Have at least six months of experience at an organization live with Tessitura

This past weekend was the start of an exciting month for Latine communities. I’m sure there are events happening near you, virtually, and even by your own organizations to celebrate the start of Latine Heritage Month. We’ve written a brief history of the month and provided some links to learn more about some important figures and moments in culture. If you have any more sources, please share them with us in the replies. There is so much more out there. Also, share this information with your own organization if you don’t have any internal and/or external messaging about the month. And of course, go support your local Latine food spots. Always great to enjoy culture through food, am I right?

History Lesson

Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM) takes place from September 15 to October 15 every year as a time to recognize and celebrate the many contributions, diverse cultures, and extensive histories of the American Latino community.

Beginning in 1968, Hispanic Heritage Month was originally observed as “Hispanic Heritage Week”, but it was later extended to a month in 1988. Since then, HHM has been celebrated nationwide through festivals, art shows, conferences, community gatherings, and much more. The month also celebrates the independence days of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua on September 15th, Mexico on September 16th, and Chile on September 18th. They also include holidays recognizing Hispanic contributions, such as Virgin Islands-Puerto Rico Friendship Day, celebrated in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In 2020, the U.S. Hispanic population was an estimated 62 million out of the total U.S. population of 331.4 million.

We know that just one descriptor can hardly capture the spirit and cultures of so many people who descend from a vast geography that includes present-day Southwestern U.S. states to the southernmost tip of South America and nearly every present-day country and island in between. This is why you'll see many different ways in which people describe themselves and their heritage. You'll see the terms Latina, Latino, and their non-gendered versions, Latine and Latinx. You might also see people identify as Hispanic, Chicano, Tejano, Taino, Isleños, Boricua, Afro-Latino, in addition to the many more terms used for people who have families and ancestors in the 22 nations and territories that comprise Latin America.

Hueniversity: Career Jumpstart

Museum Hue has launched Hueniversity: Career Jumpstart, a series of virtual workshops that uplift emerging Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, and all People of Color (BIPOC) in the arts and culture field. https://www.museumhue.org/event/find-your-why-how-to-curate-a-fulfilling-career-in-the-arts-and-culture-field/

Starting on September 28th with Find Your Why: How to Curate a Fulfilling Career in the Arts and Culture Field and ending in January with an in-person convening, the series of workshops consists of conversations and presentations led by experts in the arts who will provide insight into their career path and offer tools on building a network, resume, and cover letter writing, internship preparation, and more. Hueniversity: Career Jumpstart provides actionable steps to support emerging arts professionals seeking guidance on navigating the arts and culture space.

Registration for all four workshops is $40, while Museum Hue members receive free admission. Consider becoming a member for $30 to access Hueniversity: Career Jumpstart for free, as well as access to the Museum Hue job board.

The fall session runs September 11 - November 17, 2023. Participation in Tessitura's Career Accelerator is free of charge for applicants accepted into the program.

Hola my friends of the global majority,

Thank you to everyone who joined us at TLCC Orlando this week, both in person and virtually. Special shout out to those who made the affinity group busting with energy, excitement, and lots of great conversations throughout the conference. It was such a joy to see it filled with folks every time, and to see many of us supporting the first-time attendees, the presenters, and those going thru some things at work. This is what the group is all about. We cannot thank you enough. We hope you take the time to rest up and take many of the ideas to your organizations to create some phenom change there. We look forward to connecting again sooner than later.
